Workshop updates

In response to some comments from the community, we’re pulling back some of the requirements for both workshops.

WordPress BootCamp

Previously, the requirements for WordPress Bootcamp were:

  • Have your own server and domain set up,
  • Have an FTP Client and a code editor installed

After talking this over with some community members, we realized this is too far forward of a starting point for the people who need WordPress Bootcamp. Servers set ups are the biggest hurdle for setting up a self-hosted blog and we should definitely teach it.

We initially included this in the prerequisites because it seemed going through purchasing a server plan might get complex and we weren’t sure people should be pulling out their credit cards in the middle of a workshop. Luckily, a wonderful WordPress community member offered to donate 2 months of shared hosting to every WordPress BootCamp attendee. Attendees will still have to purchase their own domain names. We will be sending out a guide to purchasing domain names prior to the workshop and will cover setting up the domain mapping during the workshop.  All you’ll need to do is buy one before the workshop begins.

The new prerequisite for WordPress bootcamp: your own laptop

Child Theming Workshop

Similarly, the child theming workshop required attendees to have their own local development environment set up.  We realize having a local development environment is something a lot of people do not know how to do and would be a valuable thing to teach.

The new prerequisite for the Child Theming workshop:

  • Your own laptop
  • Working knowledge of CSS and HTML
  • a code editor
  • an FTP client

We will be sending out a preparation guide including recommended FTP clients and code editors.
